Structured data for small brands: the markup that matters.
Schema markup is how you label your facts for machines. Four types do most of the work — and a few mistakes quietly void all of it.
Search engines and AI assistants read your pages as text and guess at the rest. Structured data removes the guessing: a small block of code that states, unambiguously, ‘this is a company, founded here, offering this, at this price, updated on this date.’ Google uses it for rich results; AI systems use it to ground facts. For a small brand it is one of the cheapest credibility signals available — and most small sites ship without it.
The four types that matter
Organization establishes who you are — name, site, founder, links to your profiles — and helps systems connect mentions of you across the web into one entity. FAQPage marks up real questions and answers; it is the format AI most readily lifts, and a detailed FAQ is also your best defence against models inventing facts about you. Article with a visible date signals freshness — assistants favour recently updated sources. Product with Offer states what you sell and at what price, so a shopping-intent answer can include you with specifics rather than skip you.
The mistakes that void it
Three errors undo the work. Markup that does not match the visible page — claiming reviews that are not shown, prices that differ — gets ignored and can earn a penalty. Invalid JSON: one stray comma and the whole block is unreadable; machines do not squint. And marking up everything indiscriminately: schema is for the facts that matter, not decoration. Precise and sparse beats broad and sloppy.
How to check yours in two minutes
Paste your URL into Google’s Rich Results Test, or view your page source and search for ‘ld+json’. You are looking for valid blocks, on the right pages, saying true things. If the test shows nothing, you now know a gap your competitors may already have covered.
Where it fits in the bigger picture
Structured data does not create authority on its own — it makes existing substance legible. It belongs to the technical layer of GEO, alongside crawlable pages and a clean sitemap, underneath the content and mentions that do the persuading. Foundation, not facade.
How FIB approaches it
Every site we build or audit ships with Organization, FAQ, Article, and where relevant Product markup — validated, matching the visible content, and dated. This site is our own reference implementation. If you want to know what your pages currently tell machines, get in touch.
